Dominion Energy’s South Carolina freezer and refrigerator recycling program picked up its 20,000th appliance the week of August 9. The company has provided residential electric customers the opportunity to recycle freezers and refrigerators since 2014.
The 20,000th appliance came from the Timms family (right) of Summerville, S.C. “Having the appliance picked up from home was a real help,” Geoffrey Timms told Dominion. “We are excited about the fact that it’s going to be recycled and not put into a landfill. We wanted to do our bit for the environment.”

Eligible Dominion customers receive a $50 cash-back rebate within six weeks after free pickup of the appliance.
Why would a power company do this? Environmental stewardship. Refrigerators 15 years or older use twice as much energy as a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator.
Homeowners can save on utility bills and reduce their carbon footprint with a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator. The ENERGY STAR Savings Calculator (right) helps consumers understand the savings. Dominion said that could be up to $105 annually on an electric bill.
Only full-size appliances in working condition are eligible for recycling. Customers may visit this website (left) for complete program eligibility.
The company is a partner in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Responsible Appliance Disposal program. These best practices have diverted more than 2.4 million pounds of waste from landfills, including:
- 2,140,000 pounds of metal
- 260,000 pounds of plastic
- 45,000 pounds of glass
